🎄 Windows Xp Welcome Screen Stuck
In Windows XP, there was an option to change the logon screen background color: HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Colors. You could change the string "Background" to any 3-digit RGB color code you wanted. (i.e., 0 0 0 = black, etc.) This color would show up on CTRL+ALT+DEL plus it would show up when you logged in remotely using Remote Desktop.

Click Start button then "Run". Unfortunately, the Welcome screen cannot be used at all with XP machines on a domain. You might be able to do so in Windows Vista or 7, but not on XP. OK, suspicions confirmed. No harm in trying.

Sorted out the file system with chkdsk etc. Repair install of XP SP3 ran but boots into a black screen with a moveable mouse cursor but nothing to click on. Ctrl/Shift/Esc etc doesn't bring up task manager. PC is not locked up as the odd flicker from the HDD LED shows, but can't do anytihng with it.
