It sounds like you are using simple automatic. If you want to be able to shift between reverse, neutral, and drive, go into the Gameplay Options and select Real Automatic in the transmission dropdown. Then, go to Keybindings and assign a button to shift up, and shift down. After that, you should be able to control when the truck shifts into Normally its not a problem but when your at the end of a perfect 1000k trip its annoying to suddenly reverse into a car and take dmg. It's a know bug. Happens if you let off the brake before the suspension pushes back up when you come to a complete stop. Best to not let off the brake until all motion ceases. There's no button to switch from forward to reverse. In "Real Automatic" mode you need (almost) to define 2 buttons: up gear and down gear. Those two allows you to move from reverse to neutral to forward and vice versa. One on one of those modes, the change between gears is done automatically.
