(not visible in camera optical finder, only in zoomed 100% on camera LCD) This has stunned me! I had been seeing the focus un-sharp on images of faces up close using my 70-200 IS 4.0 & my 24-105 which is why I ran the test. Canon cant fix them and they wont replace them either. For full disclosure I am one of the many who have a 70D with the focus problem. To the OP. I wouldn't get in a hurry waiting for a fix from canon. The 1D mark iii had focus issues for 2 years and 2 recalls before canon even admitted there was a problem. When the text or focus points show in different parts of the viewfinder’s view, those points show a sharp image. Two things come to mind. #1 the min temp spec from Canon R is 0C. #2 LCD panels start to turn dark at some point below 0C and also go dark at high temps. Different panels may very. A product I designed a while ago had a LCD panel and in the environmental test the display started to turn dark at +40 and -10C. I got mine back and have only done some initial tests but it does not appear like the issue has been fixed at all, going to have to micro adjust my lenses again. Pretty dissapointing. Most instruction manuals and 'how-to' books recommend using a dummy target the same distance as you plan to stand from the camera. You can either use AF (autofocus) to focus on it and then set the lens' switch to MF (manual focus) or set focus mode to MF and use the dummy target to manually focus on the spot you intend to stand. dVsw.
